| Itineraries through Castelnuovo Berardenga
Some names and ruins testify the presence of Etruscans in the zone from the 6th century; the village takes its name from the noble Berardo, a French bird, who lived in the 10th century and was a descent of the Count Guinigi (vassal of Carl the Great and 867 - 881 Count of Siena). Between the end of 10th and the start of the 12th century the family Ugurgeri della Berardenga was the feudatory of some Castels (Campi, Capratusa, Caspreno, Chiesamonti, Dofana, Montalto, Montaperti, Orgiale, Pancole, Ripalta, Valcortese, Vitignano); the many churches testify an important economical and demographical development. Siena exercised a tight control on the territory of Berardenga until every castle felt into its hands.
For its strategic importance , at the beginning of the 14th century the Berardenga became Vicariato and in 1366 Siena decided to defend the east zone of the city so that a new castle was built in the place called "Poggio de' Frati": Castelnuovo Berardenga. The Florentine assaulted the castle before it was finished and in 1382 it was sacked. The castle turned into the hands of the Sienese, who had to defend it also in 1478 and 1479. Only because of the betrayal of Count Francesco Landi Castelnuovo, it felt again into the hands of the rivals, but after one year siege it returned to Siena. In 1511 Siena ceded it to the podestà Belisario Bulgarini and later it passed under the domination of Bellannati family until 1526. One year later it passed again to Siena and it was visited from Charles de Bourbon and from the Pope Paul III.
Florence conquered the castle only in 1554 with the Medici family. In 1774 with the Grand Duke Leopoldo it passed under the control of Siena. We see today only one of the seven towers that were on the fortifications’ walls: the clock tower. In the centre predominates the majestic villa Chigi Saracini, with its park, a beautiful Italian garden encircled by a surrounding wall.
The main church is rather interesting to see : a Madonna by Giovanni di Paolo (1426) and a wooden panel by Andrea di Niccolò with the same subject.
