WHERE TO GO Itineraries through Greve in Chianti The ancient Etruscan settlement was transformed into a pagus by the Romans at the epoch of Silla; the first inhabited placed was probably the hill of San Francis; during the 11th century San Bernardo degli Uberti offered the little village to the San Salvi monastery. It hosted an hospital for pilgrims managed by the Florentine “Compagnia del Bigallo” and at the end of the XIV century a Franciscan convent, around which developed the village. The village is located in a flat area where the road from Florence leading into Chianti crosses the road that links the Pesa and Elsa valleys to the upper part of the Valdarno. The form of the main square reveals its origin as a market place. This character of exchange centre, situated between the two important Republics of Florence and Siena has lead Greve to develop widely, as we can notice it from the several parishes, churches, castles and feud villages around it, as well as from the cultural and artistic importance of the place.
